Field Study on Wood Accumulation at a Bridge Pier

چکیده
Transported large wood (LW) in rivers may block at river infrastructures such as bridge piers and pose an additional flood hazard. An improved process understanding of LW accumulations is essential for a risk assessment. Therefore, we conducted field study the River Glatt Zurich (Switzerland) to analyze accumulation single logs circular pier evaluate results previous flume experiments with respect potential scale effects. The test demonstrated that can be described by impact, rotation, separation phase. was combining two simplified equilibria acting forces moments, which are mainly function diameter, roughness, flow properties. We applied resulting analytic criterion data explain behavior 82% logs. In general, observations confirmed on probability laboratory, supports applicability laboratory studies investigate LW–structure interactions.

Experimental Study of a Controlled Rocking Bridge Pier
Controlled rocking of steel braced frames has been proposed for the seismic retrofit of structures. The controlled rocking approach allows a frame to uplift from its support at the base-of-column to foundation interface while displacementbased steel yielding devices are implemented at the base location to control the response. Past studies have focused on analytical investigations of the respon...
متن کاملDebris Accumulation at Bridge Crossings: Laboratory and Field Studies
Extensive accumulation of large woody debris at bridge piers poses a chronic and sometimes quite severe problem at several bridge crossings in Indiana. This study, involving both laboratory and field components, examines the factors contributing to the initiation and development of such debris piles. The laboratory study, performed in a rectangular channel with a single model pier (and in some ...
متن کاملPredicting Bridge Pier Scour Depth with SVM
Prediction of maximum local scour is necessary for the safety and economical design of the bridges. A number of equations have been developed over the years to predict local scour depth using laboratory data and a few pier equations have also been proposed using field data. Most of these equations are empirical in nature as indicated by the past publications. In this paper attempts have been ma...
متن کاملPerformance of Nondestructive Sonic Echo Testing Method on Partially Dismantled Unknown Wood Bridge Foundations; A Case Study
Sonic Echo (SE) testing method is a well-known, versatile method to gather information pertaining to unknown bridge foundations. Many studies on the applicability and methodology improvement of SE tests to evaluate individual piles and foundations supporting the superstructure have been reported previously. However, there is a rare opportunity for obtaining the performance of SE tests without t...
متن کاملA Real-Time Vibration Frequency Measurement System of Bridge Pier
This study developed a real-time remote monitoring system (RTRMS) to receive the vibration frequency of bridge pier. The system included a front station and a middle station. A multi-hop wireless routing is employed to transmit the data from the front to the middle station. The front station includes a receiver equipped to receive the vibration frequency, and a wireless sensor network to transm...
